The black bridle across the face, nape, and throat varies extensively and may help Blue Jays recognize one another.
Blue Jays lower their crests when they are feeding peacefully with family and flock members or tending to nestlings.
The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs.

I really like how you are able to capture the beauty and sweetness of birds..
interesting – brown pigment looking SO bright blue. 🙂
I knew about the blue color but all the rest was new info and wonderful to learn. Lovely bird. We only have scrub jays here in oregon
The colourful plumage in this bird is amazing
Gorgeous….
Wunderschöner Vogel ❤
Interesting to read all these facts…I love trivia like this. And of course the blue jay is a favorite….great photos. Thanks for sharing the link at I’d Rather B Birdin’ this week.
Interesting facts not many knew!…:)JP
Such a beautiful bird! Love the colors!
lovely images!
Very interesting information and very beautiful photos. The blue jay is an American bird, I remember how I was amazed when I first saw it in the Central Park, New York.
Pat, very interesting! I did not know those facts. Great shots too!
Very nice shots. The 1st one has such a narrow look to it’s face. I like that last shot a lot.
Really interesting facts about these handsome birds.
Your portrait of them are wonderful.
Thank you for sharing, Pat.
The Blue Jays have been helping me find hawks these past several days. They have a unique brief and urgent call that seems different from their usual racket. I notice they sometime follow me with the sun at their backs, as their shadows fall on mine.
Pretty captures of the Blue Jays! They are another one of my favorite yardbirds.. Enjoy your evening.
It’s so hard to believe that melanin is brown! 🙂 Those bright blue feathers are like stained glass. You got some really beautiful shots, and I loved the info.
Very interesting, Pat. Thanks.
I love the last shot! It shows his beautiful colours perfectly.
These shots are stunning!
Very smart bird and the feather detail in the last shot really shows this.
interesting shot … so curious. ( :
Handsome shots of a handsome bird! I hope he doesn’t squawk too loudly when he wants more grub, I have a couple that do that to me this time of year…
