Orthopterous and Carnivorous

The Praying Mantis

by Ogden Nash

From whence arrived the praying mantis?
From outer space, or lost Atlantis?
glimpse the grin, green metal mug
at masks the pseudo-saintly bug,
Orthopterous, also carnivorous,
And faintly whisper, Lord deliver us.

My keen-eyed husband spotted and photographed this little (about 2 inches long) critter.

Oh, how cute the praying mantis look in your wonderful photos. I have a memory (more than 50 years ago) that one of them was on outside of the front door and I couldn’t get inside p;) We can rarely see these varieties of wild life here… Thank you very much for the great poem as well!
